      Silicone Sealing (Caulking)

      What is Caulking?

Caulking is both a material and process that has been utilised for centuries.

Often referred to as sealant, caulk is a non-structural, physical compound that delivers a non-porous seal that is both air and water tight. The flexible sealing compound is used to close gaps in walls, floors, windows and other building structures. It’s purpose is to prevent the entry of water, dust, insects, air, or alternatively as a component in fire stopping.

Caulk can be used to seal joints even if the materials being sealed are quite different.

Silicone is the most common caulking material currently in use for sealing and waterproofing joints. Depending on the required result the sealant may be coloured or translucent. GS Finishing Services will advise on the most suitable sealant for the job in hand.

Over time, waterproofing Sealants will need to be replaced as they lose their flexibility, become discoloured or start to disintegrate. This will happen in the home as well as in staff washrooms and toilets.

GS Finishing Services are experts in the removal of old sealants and the application of new material to ensure the joints remain watertight. We offer a complete silicone replacement service in which we undertake the following important steps:

      1. All silicone areas are inspected for damage
      2. All damaged / peeled silicone is removed using special tools and equipment
      3. All joints are thoroughly cleaned using a special solution then dried
      4. New silicone is installed and smoothed out to a professional finish

      • 5.Different areas will require different joint widths of silicone, these can range from 4 to 12 mm

6.All silicone residue is removed before it starts to cure then allowed to dry

        7.Areas can’t be used for 24 hours

Silicone replacement is a slow process and requires professional attention in order to be installed effectively. Remember improper installation can cause permanent damage to the property by not offering a water tight seal along joints.
